Can You Tan While Wearing Sunscreen?

If Sunscreen Works, Why Do You Still Tan?

You've applied sunscreen, spent the day outside, and somehow still came home with a tan.

So what gives? Doesn't sunscreen block the sun? Not exactly.

No Sunscreen Blocks 100% of UV Rays

Sunscreen is incredibly effective at reducing UV damage, but no sunscreen can completely block all ultraviolet radiation. Most SPF ratings are based primarily on protection against UVB rays—the rays responsible for sunburn. Think B for burning. But UVB isn't the whole story.

The Role of UVA Rays

UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin and are strongly linked to:

  • Tanning

  • Hyperpigmentation

  • Wrinkles and premature aging

  • Long-term skin damage

  • Deep skin cancers like melanoma

Even when you're wearing sunscreen, some UV radiation can still reach your skin, especially if you're spending hours outdoors or forget to reapply. That's why it's possible to tan while wearing SPF.

What a Tan Really Means

Many people love a nice tan, but most people don’t know that a tan is actually your skin’s defense mechanism against UV damage! When your skin is exposed to UV radiation, it produces more melanin (pigment) to help protect itself from further damage.

In other words, a tan is your body's response to UV-induced stress.

The good news? Sunscreen is great for reducing damage once the melanin has reached its limit and needs a bit of help,  even if it doesn't eliminate it entirely.
